AKHi Called It Before the Bell: Canelo All Day — No VADA, the Gloves, and the WBC Saw to That

Plenty of people picked Canelo Alvarez to beat Christian Mbilli. Fewer of them said it the way AKHi TV said it before the first bell in Riyadh: put your house on Canelo. In this pre-fight prediction video — recorded ahead of the Halloween card, whatever the video’s updated title now says — the host’s call was specific. Canelo most likely by knockout. And if it went to a decision, Canelo gets the unanimous decision unless Mbilli clearly, unmistakably wins it. The fight went the distance. Canelo got the unanimous decision. The winner was right, the route was right, and only the knockout never showed up.

What makes the video worth revisiting is why he flipped. When the fight was announced, the host called it a great fight, a war, a genuine 50/50. What changed his mind on the way in was not the fighters — it was the conditions. He pointed at the absence of VADA testing for the fight. He pointed at the glove controversy, with Mbilli accusing Canelo of tampering and the WBC president publicly defending Canelo’s honour — a defence the host found about as surprising as sunrise, and he went further, claiming the WBC has bent its own testing rules around its star before. Those testing and glove claims are the host’s case, stated as his reasoning, and they are the same dispute that followed this fight all week.

The style read held up too. Mbilli, he argued, is tailor-made for Canelo — a come-forward puncher walking onto counters — with one danger: Canelo does not have the best output, fights in spurts the way he did at 22 against Austin Trout, and can gas if Mbilli stays in his face. And the host said the quiet part about Riyadh judging outright, in his own framing: with the deck he believes Canelo carries into a decision, Mbilli did not just need rounds, he needed the fight taken out of the judges’ hands entirely. He never got close to doing it.

Our take: a prediction is only interesting when it shows its working, and this one did — conditions, styles, and the scorecard reality, all before a punch was thrown. The glove and testing row that changed AKHi’s mind started days earlier, when Mbilli first questioned Canelo’s gloves and the WBC closed ranks. Nothing in the result answers those questions. The questions are still standing there, waiting for somebody with authority to treat them like they matter.
