Usyk Wants Benavidez at Cruiserweight, Says AKHi — but Benavidez Himself Says Opetaia Comes First

The Mexican Monster has done what a decade of mandatories could not: he has made Oleksandr Usyk look back down the scale. In this AKHi TV video, the host reports that Usyk’s adviser has revealed Usyk wants to come back down to cruiserweight to face David Benavidez for the undisputed crown — and that Benavidez accepted, a man who, the host notes, had already said yes to Usyk at heavyweight, let alone at cruiserweight. This is the same host who says he struck Usyk from his own pound-for-pound list for vacating his belts, walking away from his mandatories and chasing a kickboxer and Deontay Wilder instead. His read on the reversal is simple: Benavidez made himself too hot to ignore.

The host’s case is built on position, not talk. Benavidez sits top five on his pound-for-pound list, fights for a third cruiserweight title on December 5 by the host’s account, and stands one more belt from undisputed — with the host predicting he takes that belt from Jai Opetaia. That, he argues, is exactly how you earn a legend’s attention: stack titles in one division until the greats have to come to you. He contrasts it with Dmitry Bivol, who in his telling turned toward Canelo rather than fight Benavidez, and declares the Monster done swimming with ducks.

Then the video lets Benavidez speak for himself, and his version is more disciplined than the headline. In the closing interview clip he says Artur Beterbiev has reached out and is actively trying to make a fight, that he has two great cruiserweight fights in front of him first — Opetaia, then Beterbiev coming up — and that heavyweight, Usyk and even Tyson Fury, who he says mentioned his name, are what come after. Told that Usyk is interested as early as next year, Benavidez does not blink: one hundred percent, he says, he is actively looking to make that happen too. So the agreement the title shouts about is real interest on both sides — but “next” it is not, and Benavidez’s own list proves it.

The host still makes his pick, and it is not a shy one: Benavidez over Usyk at cruiserweight, all day, scored 60/40 to 65/35 in the Monster’s favour, and even at heavyweight he calls it 50/50 while leaning Benavidez to pull it off. Contrast that with a champion being told to fight his mandatory at the wrong weight — Benavidez is chasing the bigger man up and down two divisions and asking for the hardest route in order. Our take: this is what standing on business looks like. Beat Opetaia, take undisputed, and if Usyk truly comes down, boxing gets the rare fight where the legend has to prove he still runs a division he left behind.
